Singapore is a multicultural city functioning as global hub in the south-east Asia. Recent years, there is an increasing number of NGOs, social enterprises and community projects in Singapore. The concept of “service learning” has been widely introduced into Singapore education system. It believes that students could have better understanding on their role and responsibility in society through engaging in community services.

This is the first service leaders exchange tour to Singapore organized by the HKUST Connect Service Leaders Network for its members.

What will participants do?
- Observe and learn about the social problems in Singapore through community visits
- Meet representatives of social enterprises and NGOs to learn from and explore their work
- Exchange ideas with Singapore universities students in the context of volunteering and community engagement

Through the tour, participants will be able to:
- Explore the similarities and differences of social issues between the two metropolitan cities and how the issues have been addressed
- Understand the volunteering culture in Singapore
- Connect with other service leaders and, by creating a common experience, share and develop service ideas

Singapore Study Tour 15 - 19 January 2017
Post-trip sharing session 10 February 2017 (Fri) 6 - 8pm
Program Fee HK$3,000 (subject to final airfare available)
  • Participants may be able to reimburse up to HK$1,000 upon satisfactory completion of the whole program, including active participation in group preparation tasks, workshops and submission of reflection report.

  • Student may apply for Connect Overseas Service Learning Grant (OSLG) to receive subsidy to cover part of the program fee. Additional consideration will be given to those with financial need. More details.

  • Students who received government grant & loan via Tertiary Student Finance Scheme (TSFS) will get pre-approval of OSLG, subject to presentation of TSFS notification of result during interview and satisfactory completion of the program.

Program fee includes:
  • Round-trip flights to Singapore, accommodation (dormitory with shared bathroom) and travel insurance

  • Program fee does NOT include:
  • Local transportation, meals during program activities, personal expenses and expenses out of the official program, travel document/ visa application, additional travel and medical insurance

Interview Interviews will be held on 28 and 29 November 2016. Shortlisted applicants will be notified via email.
Note To ensure the quality of the tour and a positive team experience, the organizer reserves the right to terminate the participation for any student who fail to attend 100% of the required pre-trip activities, and the program fee will not be refunded.
