Update on 10 March 2020:
On 6 Mar 2020, the HKSAR Government Department of Health issued advice for the public to consider delaying all non-essential travel outside of Hong Kong. In response to the rapidly evolving global health situation surrounding COVID-19 and holding the health, safety and best interests of our students as our highest priority, the University decided to suspend all outbound student activities to take place outside of Hong Kong during the Summer Term. Hence, all Service Learning Trips organized / coordinated by HKUST Connect this Summer Term will be suspended. If you have any questions, please contact us.

Cambodia is a developing and charming country recovered from a tragic past. The level of education in Cambodia has been improving, yet there is still an educational gap when compared with other developed countries. Will you join us to give them a helping hand?

This summer marks the 19th service learning trip to Cambodia since 2011. This trip aims to continue our support to the children and youth at Wat Opot Children's Community and a local primary school. The team will organize educational activities and interactive workshops to narrow the educational gap in developing country and help their youth to develop their potential. You will also meet with the former Who Will village children who are now at University in Phnom Penh and exchange cultural experience.

Participants of the trip will be able to:

  • Empower Cambodian children and youth, both being looked after by NGOs or not, to develop their potential through educational workshops.
  • Embrace cultural diversities and achieve cultural exchange through investigating different aspects of the Cambodian community.
  • Spread a caring message in HKUST campus through sharing their experience during and after the service trip.

  • Trip participants entering Hong Kong from region/countries with compulsory quarantine order, such as mainland China, Korea, Italy and Iran, will be required to undergo quarantine or medical surveillance off-campus for 14 days BEFORE the first face-to-face workshop, following the Hong Kong Government's inbound travel restrictions regarding COVID-19.
Participants are reminded to plan their schedule ahead so be able to join the face-to-face workshops and the trip. (The University can no longer support any new cases of student self-quarantine on campus, other than in exceptional circumstances which will be on a chargeable basis.)

Request for absence due to academic course-related examinations will be considered on a case by case basis. The organizer reserves the right to terminate the participation for any student who fail to meet the above requirements, and the program fee will not be refunded.

Additional Information on Collaborators in Cambodia

The Wat Opot Children's Community (http://www.watopot.org)

The Wat Opot Community was founded by Wayne Dale Matthysse in 2002. It is rare, and perhaps unique in Cambodia, for HIV-infected and non-infected children to live together as family, sharing homes and meals and playing together. Many children who are not physically affected by the virus are living here because their primary caregiver was or is HIV Positive and has either died or is unable to take care of them. Some are orphans who are not HIV+ but have lost their parents altogether to AIDS. One of the primary goals of The Wat Opot Community is to restore the joy of living to these adults and children. The community also builds strong connection with neighboring villages.

Who Will Village (http://www.who-will.org)

Who Will Village is a local NGO registered in Cambodia dedicated to caring for orphans and disadvantaged children and poor Cambodian Communities with no religious affiliation. It is a relatively small NGO that is privately funded. Who Will’s mission is to care for orphans or disadvantaged children of Cambodia, by providing them a village in which they can be raised in a proper family environment. For each house there will be a housemother, their role is to bring up her family as if their true mother. Ultimately this village will appear to be just another country village and it will be fully integrated into the community, ensuring that the children will not carry the unjustified stigma of “coming from an orphanage”.
