ISSA Summer Fun with Local South Asians

With the help of 8 HKUST volunteers, a short summer program was organized to foster cultural exchange between our students and South Asian children through interesting science activities. The children had a fun time as the volunteers taught them how to make leaf vein bookmarks and the science behind it. The volunteers were amazed by the children’s creativity and bookmark designs!

HKUST volunteers participated in home visits to meet and greet elders in support of the "Ageing-in-Place" (AIP) Scheme . The volunteers chatted with the elderly about many topics, even personal life stories. The volunteers also brought along care packages for the elders, sponsored by the HSBC Share-To-Care Volunteer Campaign.

A group of students from previous Cambodia trip continued their effort and led the 5th batch of students to Cambodia from 6-12 June 2013. They revisited two orphanages (Wat Opot and Who Will) and Cambodian Children Fund (CCF) and organized interesting classes and activities for the children.

Service Camp for Ethnic Minority Families

The Tuen Mun Service Camp was organized by the students from the Jiangxi Service Learning Trip, which was cancelled due to the outbreak of Avian Influenza (H7N9) in Mainland China in April. Our students decided to serve the local community and together they planned a three-day service camp in which they organized different activities for South Asians and the other local families living at Tuen Mun.

Every year, Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Choi Hung Community Centre for Senior Citizens co-operates with other elderly centers within the Wong Tai Sin area to hold the annual Hearty Rice Dumplings for the Elderly programme. It aims to raise the awareness of the needs of singleton elderly within the neighborhood community and to engage volunteers to show care and concern to the targeted group in person.

HKUST Service Learning Day 2013

HKUST Service Learning Day 2013 has been held between 18-21 April. All University members of HKUST were invited to engage in various meaningful community service opportunities over the weekend. The event was officiated by Prof Wei Shyy, Provost in the Kick-off Ceremony on 18 April. In total, over 900 volunteers were recruited to participate in 47 service projects, serving over 4300 service hours during this period.

City Challenge 2013

The second City Challenge was held on Saturday, 2 March 2013, wherein 200 competitors in 40 teams of 5 raced around the streets of Central and Sheung Wan to raise much-needed funds for underprivileged families in Nepal. The theme of the race is ‘Nepal’ as this is where CWS delivers its effective life-saving programmes that support over 30,000 children every year through education, health care and social opportunities.

Being part of the Ageing-in-Place Scheme coordinated by the Housing Society, ACEs planned a series of activities for the service recipients around Chinese Lunar New Year in 2013.

A team of 87 students collected surplus fresh bread from Maxim's cake stores all across Hong Kong during the event organized by Feeding Hong Kong. Our team collected more than 1600 pieces of bread from 49 stores all around Hong Kong.

In January 2013, a team of 22 HKUST students and staff went to Pokhara, Nepal to build a house for a local couple. A group of 7 students helped in the “Starstreet Gourmet & Wine Walk” event at Starstreet Precinct and ADA was the sole beneficiary for the year.

FYS Seminar: Make an Impact by Caring and Serving

Martin is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Halogen Foundation Singapore. He formerly served as Board Member of National Library Board and Chairman of the Public Library Advisory Committee. Martin has a big heart to build young leaders. In the seminar, Martin shared with us the things he cared about and discussed how he discovered his passion of nurturing young leaders through serving.
