Cooking with the Elderly 老有所為2010「煮出新心意」 ── 家庭小菜篇

Student volunteers joined hands with different community parties such as families and housewives to support this program by sharing the joy of cooking with the elders, recording cooking tips and recipes from the elders for publication.

HKUST students helped in organizing the game booths, providing on-site logistic support and watching Live World Cup Final with more than 200 young night drifters in Tseung Kwan O district.

The 34th HKSO Swimming Gala

Joining hands with different community parties, HKUST student volunteers supported the event by assisting the operation of the competition and taking care of the intellectually disabled athletes.

World Gallery of Hope (Summer 2010)

The theme of the project is to let the HKUST students see the world through the children’s eyes and let the children express their creativity and feeling in a layman's perspective. Our student volunteers provided an opportunity for the children of the ethnic minorities and underprivileged background within local communities to explore their creative capabilities through a 2-week program on digital photography and story-telling techniques.

Students joined other volunteers from different corporates and local workers in restoring and conserving culturally valuable stilt houses in Tai O.

Sichuan Service Learning Program

This Program was student-initiated and has been successfully held in June 2009 and January 2010. This trip is the Group’s continued effort to help the Sichuan primary school students see the fun in learning science and motivate them to apply their knowledge in daily lives.

Coinciding with Global Youth Service Day, UST Service Learning Day is a joint effort of all University members to engage with the community. More than 300 students, staff and alumni fanned out into the community over the weekend to engage in over 20 meaningful community service opportunities.

GNED171 Service Learning Project ── Mini-U

HKUST students from GNED171 course (Spring2010) delivered three workshops to new immigrant children and fun games were used as teaching tools to inspire their interest in English and basic electronics.

Project Twice Exceptional

The team helped transcribing the tapes that contain the interviews with parents of Twice Exceptionals* into text. They also helped in designing and implementing an online learning tool for the Twice Exceptionals.

*Twice-exceptional students are students who are identified as gifted and talented in one or more areas of exceptionality (specific academics, general intellectual ability, creativity, leadership, visual, or performing arts).

HKUST students served as LEAD Ambassadors in planning and delivering programs to provide creative experiences to disadvantaged children who do not easily have access to such experiences.

Creative Engineering and Science Competitions for Youngsters

HKUST students assisted in the operation of the Hong Kong FLL Robotics Tournament for primary and secondary students by serving in the training workshops and the tournament. They also provided support in preparation of the materials like LEGO fields as well as designing and operating a carnival booths in the tournament.

The team was responsible for organizing a carnival to educate primary school children and parents on proper internet usage and knowledge .

Anti-drug Carnival in Po Lam, Tseung Kwan O

HKUST Students designed and operated the carnivals to help the community better understand the problem of drug abuse, hence raising awareness towards the need of preventive measures.

Special Olympics University Program

HKUST students participated in this 3-day training organized by HKSO in order to equip themselves as qualified volunteers to assist and organize sports events for the intellectually disabled in the future.

This project enhanced HKUST students’ understanding of the impacts of earthquakes and the socio- and economical challenges faced by post-quake communities through teaching the local primary school students about science and mathematics.
