Recruitment of Organizing Committee Members for 2017/18 Winter Service Learning Trips

In this coming winter, HKUST Connect is going to organize service learning trips to Cambodia, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Nepal and a service camp to Lantau Island in Hong Kong. Through engaging in these service learning programs, students will be able to broaden their horizons, enrich their university life, and raise their awareness of their responsibilities as global citizens.

We are now looking for committed and experienced students to serve as Organizing Committee (OC) members for these upcoming programs. We expect OC members to take a leading role in designing and preparing the program along with the participants. OC members will also receive training and guidance on program planning and implementation from trip advisors!

Holding pre-trip workshops for the participants
Guiding participants to reflect their ideas
Leading participants to implement service activities
Serving communities around the world

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Lead and facilitate participants to serve, learn and reflect through regular sub-team meetings, workshops and activities
  • Plan and implement service programs for the recipients along with the participants
  • Oversee the program's progress and ensure the quality of services
  • Act as a bridge between HKUST Connect and the participants

  • Brief Introduction of Upcoming Service Learning Trips:

    Cambodia Service Learning Trip
    Spread love and care to Cambodian children and support their learning by providing workshops and interactive games in local youth centers and orphanages. More info

    Specific requirements:
    - Experience in working with kids
    - Experience in organizing mass game/program is a plus


    Guizhou Service Learning Trip
    Express love and care to village children in rural Guizhou by organizing interactive workshops and games in schools. The team would also conduct home visit in villages and visit the market day in town to gain a better understanding of the life in rural Guizhou.

    Specific requirements:
    - Proficient in Putonghua
    - Experience in classroom teaching is a plus
    - Physically fit for hiking

    Jiangxi Service Learning Trip
    Care for the 'left-behind children' in rural Jiangxi through interacting with them in games and activities, conduct home visit in villages, and visit an organic farm managed by a HK founded social enterprise to explore its contribution to the local community. More info

    Specific requirements:
    - Proficient in Putonghua
    - Experience in classroom teaching is a plus


    Lantau Island Service Camp
    Support primary school students with moderate to severe behavioral and emotional problems, or those coming from troubled families in a residential school on the South Lantau Island through various activities and services to the community. Past project

    Specific requirements:
    - Proficiency in Cantonese preferred

    Nepal Service Learning Trip
    Be one of the founding OC members to conduct a site visit and pilot a service learning project in Nepal through performing needs assessment in the local community and organizing interactive workshops in community partners' site.

    Experience in organizing or participating service learning trips

    - Experience in classroom teaching is a plus

    Program Fee
    • Subject to different trips
    • Subsidy will be provided to student leaders upon satisfactory completion of program.
    • Student may apply for Li Ka Shing Students' Holistic Development Scheme which aims to encourage students to engage in co-curricular programs endorsed by the Student Affairs Office, including Organizing Committee of Service Learning Trips. It provides an allowance up to HK$5,000 to motivated participants, and those with financial need will be given additional consideration.

    今年,我成為了「手牽『守童』行 - 江西服務學習之旅」的籌委,由於我從未有義教的經驗,起初我也曾擔心過自己是否能勝任籌委一職,但是後來經過籌委會議和工作坊,加上教學小組的充份準備,我也漸漸對這次旅程充滿信心了。作為一個籌委,可以說是「一次旅程,兩種體驗」,因為我們除了是團員的一份子之外,同時也要處理團隊之間的大小事務,無論是主持會議還是其他準備工作,雖然籌委的工作量絕對比只做團員的多,但卻使我有機會學習更多,不只限於實質的領袖技巧,心態的轉變才是最使我終身受用的。

    In the trip, I had a lot of chances to practice making faster decision. Since having others' support would help me make faster decision, I proposed my ideas to advisors or my OC team members to consult their opinions. I feel less panic to make decisions and handle sudden changes than before.
