Coinciding with Global Youth Service Day, HKUST Service Learning Day is a joint effort of all University members to engage with the community. Students, faculty, staff and alumni will fan out into the local community in April to engage in various meaningful community service opportunities. Ultimately, HKUST Service Learning Day is meant to be a door which opens up to many more exciting opportunities of community engagement for HKUST.

The objective of Service Learning Day is threefold:

  • To instill a heart for service learning in the entire university population – faculty, staff, students and alumni alike;
  • To mobilize the entire campus to join hands in something meaningful and memorable, making a mark as a university not just by displaying academic excellence, but also unity in diversity;
  • To gather individuals inside and outside the campus for a shared positive experience that would pave way for building lasting relationships in the future.

For many low income families, food contributes to the largest proportion of their expenses, occupying almost 40% of total family income. (0742C) Kids KOL - Managing Money
According to the 2016 poverty report, there are 7,000 more Hong Kong people living under the poverty line. The number of people living under the poverty line reaches the highest record in past 8 years. The situation is even severe for children in the low-income family. Almost 1 in 5 children are living in the poverty. Their parent cannot afford the expensive fee for them to attend tutorial class and extra-curricular activities. Due to the insufficient financial support, the children do not have many chances to access to different opportunities and resources. They will have a higher chance to be in the cycle of poverty. Therefore, it is important for children from low-income family to learn the proper money concept and money management. These concepts can help them to get ready for their future. In view of this, we partner with The Boys' & Girls' Clubs Association of Jockey Club Cheung Hang Children & Youth Integrated Service Centre to launch a service project called "Kids KOL - Managing Money". "KOL" means keep on learning. This project aiming to help kids to understand the importance of money management and keep on learning how to use money wisely through varies interactive games and life stimulation.

For many low income families, food contributes to the largest proportion of their expenses, occupying almost 40% of total family income. Children from low-income families suffer from under nutrition because of eating cheap but unhealthy food. Collaborating with HKFYG Jockey Club Ping Shek SPOT , we are recruiting volunteers to facilitate cooking activities with kids to make healthy meals with limited budget.

(1458C) Kids Go Green
Domestic problem is a significant issue in Hong Kong. Similar to many developed cities, the wasteloads in Hong Kong increases as its economy grows. Considering the increasing pressure on landfill, waste reduction and recycle is necessary. This project aims at educating the young generation to change their consumption habits through EcoPark visit and interactive activities. Volunteers will make snack bags with the children and to show appreciation to environmentally friendly shops owner in the community.
